ON-GOING CLASSES | See Current Class Schedule >
Although contemporary dance is the backbone of the curriculum, Velocity also offers classes in Ballet, Improvisation, Pilates-based mat, Feldenkrais©, Yoga, Kung-Fu, Tumbling, and related subjects. Velocity offers an average of 33 classes per week with 45% of those classes offered in contemporary dance. Instructors are highly experienced in their art and generous with their knowledge and encouragement in class. Instruction is geared towards motivating and encouraging personal exploration of movement.

Another priority for the studio has been to offer affordable rehearsal space to generative dance artists in the region. In 2002, more than 50 different dance companies and individual artists utilized Velocity, including almost all of Seattle's leading contemporary dance choreographers.

STRICTLY SEATTLE | Visit the Strictly Seattle Program Site
Each summer Velocity brings together some of the best contemporary dance professionals of the area to learn, teach and create as part of Velocity's Strictly Seattle Summer Dance Intensive. Strictly Seattle is a three week intensive comprised entirely of Seattle's own artists. The intensive offers several different programs to satisfy beginning through professional level dancers. Participants may study with three to six different instructors and work with a local choreographer in the creation and performance of a new piece, in three professionally produced public performances. Strictly Seattle gives students, teachers, and choreographers the chance to spend three weeks concentrating on their art form in a supportive and exciting environment. It creates a forum where dancers can meet and work together, forming alliances which often are the basis for future collaborations.

BRIDGE PROJECT
The Bridge Project is an annual three week winter choreography intensive designed to bring together professional choreographers and performers in the field of contemporary dance. In creating The Bridge Project, Velocity hopes to enhance the artistic growth of the resident choreographers by commissioning their work and providing rehearsal space and a performance venue. Performers are chosen through an audition and choreographers are asked to select performers with whom they don't usually work, giving both dancer and choreographer a chance to work with artists outside of their normal circle.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION | See the opportunities page for application dates
Three times a year, Velocity hosts a formal curated showing of works in progress as part of the Under-Construction Series. These public performances are an ideal way for artists to show experimental or unfinished work as part of their creative process. A feedback session with the audience and artists and led by one of the curators, follows each performance, giving artists an opportunity to receive
valuable feedback and giving the audience a chance to see inside the creative process. Velocity's goal in hosting these events is to generate an environment where support and self-criticism can flourish, pushing the boundaries of new work and the possibilities for sharing it.

GUEST ARTIST SERIES and Special Classes and Workshops
Velocity strives to give Seattle's dance community every opportunity to train with outstanding local and national artists through its many workshops and the Special Guest Artist Series. Since opening its doors, Velocity, has hosted classes and/or workshops with such nationally and internationally recognized artists as Bebe Miller, Katie Duck, David Dorfman, Nina Martin, Dan Froot, Lynn Simonson, Will Swanson, Lisa Nelson, Irene Dowd, and others. The Special Guest Artist Series presents internationally renowned artists in contemporary dance and related studies to our community, by offering classes, lectures, performances and/or workshops with these artists. Through this program, Velocity creates opportunities for open community classes as well as opportunities for local dancers to perform with some of the artists in a repertory showing setting. Velocity also presents public showings of the artists work. This program helps to insure that Seattle's relative geographic isolation does not result in a lack of exposure, and helps Seattle to stay abreast of current technical and artistic standards. Check out the Workshops Page for more info on our current Guest Artist Schedule.

NEXT | See the opportunities page for application dates
Velocity's newest program is a new works series for dance artists in the Pacific Northwest. Three to four artists are selected to present work in each show through a competitive application process.  Two public performances per installment showcase the most dynamic contemporary movement work currently coming out of our region. If you are a dance enthusiast, this is a program not to be missed.
